About Us

Our mission at Cherished Mom is to transform the dialogue around Maternal Mental Health. We are committed to ending the stigma associated with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) and enhancing awareness. We empower and support pregnant and postpartum women, families, and perinatal healthcare providers through innovative campaigns, educational programs, resources, and a nurturing community. Our leadership includes Kristina Dulaney and Teresa Twomey, who are both PPP survivors and survivor leaders. The PPP Project believes in the motto “Nothing about us without us.”

Definition and Severity:

Perinatal & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) is a severe mental health condition that can affect a new mother during pregnancy, a perinatal loss, or in the postpartum period. Although a woman can have psychosis anytime during pregnancy or postpartum, it typically occurs shortly after childbirth. It is characterized by a break in reality, including hallucinations, delusions, and extreme confusion.

Prevalence of Postpartum Psychosis:

PP affects approximately 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 in the first few weeks after childbirth. Its impact is significant and requires immediate, informed intervention.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of PPP can develop suddenly and may include delusions or strange beliefs, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there), feeling very irritated, hyperactivity, decreased need for or inability to sleep, paranoia, and rapid mood swings. Due to the severity of the symptoms, PPP is considered a medical emergency.

Risk Factors:

Known Risk factors for PPP include a history of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, a family history of mental illness, a previous psychotic episode, and recent significant stress. First-time mothers are also at a higher risk. ANYONE, despite not having an identified risk factor, may develop PPP.

Treatment ,Recovery & Outcomes:

    • Treatment for PPP typically requires immediate medical intervention, including psychiatric care, medication, and sometimes hospitalization to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby. With prompt and effective treatment, most women fully recover from PPP, though ongoing support and monitoring are important. More importantly, awareness and knowledge saves lives and prevents trauma and unfortunate outcomes.
